NYPL staff will be in the Forchheimer Lobby on October 19 from 11am-2pm and in our library on the first floor in Forchheimer from 4pm-7pm to register you for a new library card. A new resource available on AccessMedicine helps bridge the gap between course work and actual patient care experiences. Clinical Prep offers more than 650 core topics; the questions within those topics are written by specialists in the field who have first-hand experience addressing issues in a clinical setting. The answers to those questions are taken from content from the AccessMedicine collection. The questions and answer choices are reviewed and updated several times a month.
Clinical Prep’s specialty/topic lists were formatted to align with the USMLE Step 2 blueprint. The topics in this tool are the same topics found in First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CK.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office on Women’s Health (OWH) recently released the Final Report: Opioid Use, Misuse, and Overdose in Women. The report examines the prevention, treatment and recovery issues for women who misuse, have use disorders and/or overdose on opioids. It also presents findings and takeaways from OWH’s national and regional opioid meetings held in 2016. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1999 and 2015, the rate of deaths from prescription opioid overdoses increased 471% among women, compared to an increase of 218% among men. In the same time period, heroin deaths among women increased twice as quickly compared to men.
A new interactive map from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) allows users to explore state-specific information about opioid-related hospital stays. The map, which includes information on 44 states and the District of Columbia, highlights data from AHRQ’s Fast Stats, an online tool that offers national and state-specific data on hospital stays and emergency department visits, including data by age, gender, community-level income and urban versus rural residency.
