Take some time for summer reading and get ready for the Book Club’s September 9 meeting (at 9:00am). We’ll be discussing The Language of Baklava, Diana Abu-Jaber’s humorous memoir of her Jordanian-American upbringing (with recipes!).

The Book Club will round out its year of food reading with Salt: A World History, by Mark Kurlansky. We will discuss that on November 11.

The Book Club is open to the entire Einstein community.

Samuel Gottesman Library welcome new and returning students and wish you a successful academic year!  Librarians are here to assist you with research or other information needs. Please let us know when you have questions about services or access to electronic resources. We’re here to help you! 

Our new Library Orientation guide is designed to give you a brief introduction to the D. Samuel Gottesman Library of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Take a virtual tour of the Library, find out when the Library is open and learn how to:

• access Library resources from your apartment or off campus
• print a document
• set up wireless printing on your laptop
• reserve a group study room
• borrow an iPad, MacBook or laptop

The latest SciENcv release has a new feature to help users convert biosketches from the former NIH biographical sketch format to the new biographical sketch format. The new format is required for NIH grant applications.

1. Log into My NCBI.
2. Click "Manage SciENcv."
3. Select a profile listed as "Old NIH Biosketch"
4. On the selected profile page, click the green button "Upgrade this biosketch." The name field can be edited, and the sharing status can be changed from the default private to public.
5. Click "Create" to generate a copy of the profile in the new format.

The Library is preparing its annual exhibit recognizing Einstein faculty editors of journals, series, annuals and websites. The exhibit will be on display in the Library lobby on the first floor of the Forchheimer Building from mid-August through September. If you presently hold an editorial position at a journal, series, annual or website, please email karen.sorensen@einstein.yu.edu or phone her at 718-430-3104. The deadline for submissions is August 5.

The Library has published a new guide for using Zotero, a free tool for managing your references from within the Firefox browser. You can add references from library databases, add books with websites like Amazon.com and WorldCat.org, and manually add any references, such as websites. You can insert in-text citations while typing your papers, and generate a bibliography of all your references at the end. Zotero also makes it easy to collaborate with others and discover new sources.  

On July 23, the Library hosted Kinga Hosszu and Cesar Berrios-Otero from Faculty of 1000. The two of them showed interested grad students and postdocs how to make the most of F1000 Workspace, a powerful tool for collecting, managing, sharing, collaborating, and citing scientific literature. The two representatives also gave a presentation on career opportunities in science publishing, which explained job requirements, gave an idea of potential career trajectories and offered tips on how to get that coveted position.

The new digital collection from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) iincludes:

• The Anatomy of Melancholy by Robert Burton, published in London in the year 1660, and one of the first books on the issue of depression
• the anonymously penned, Treasure for Poore Men, a popular manual published in London in 1565 and containing recipes such as “A medicine for the eye if it be hurte with a thorne” and “a migraine in the head”
• reports about various local hospitals and other charitable organizations in Britain during the 18th century, including Guy’s Hospital in London (1734), Lying-In Charity for Delivering Poor Women at their Own Habitations (1772), and the Asylum for Orphan Girls (1786)
• pamphlets advertising patent medicines and popular guides to health and reproduction.
