A key feature of the UpToDate Anywhere product is the ability for you to access UpToDate remotely and via the UpToDate mobile app from iOS, Android and Windows 8 devices.  Currently, for you to maintain these UpToDate Anywhere access rights at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, you must confirm your ongoing affiliation with this institution by logging into UpToDate from within the network at least once every 30 days.

UpToDate has extended this re-verification timeframe to 90 days, effective July 1, 2015. Users who log in to UpToDate from within our network at least once every 90 days will maintain their UpToDate Anywhere access rights with no disruption. Users who approach this 90 day timeframe without having logged in to UpToDate from within our network will automatically be reminded to do so in order to keep their UpToDate Anywhere access rights. 

Follow these steps to get the app:

1.   From a desktop or laptop computer, click on the UpToDate link on the Library’s home page:http://library.einstein.yu.edu

2.  Click on the Login/Register button of UpToDate’s main search page

3.  Fill out the New User registration form.  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email from UpToDate

4.  Download the UpToDate app on your mobile device from the App Store, Google Play, or Windows Store

5.  Log on to UpToDate with the user name you just created

Now available in Gmail settings, the useful "Undo Send" feature.  In the web version of Gmail, you can turn-on the function in "Settings" and you'll have the option to "Enable Undo Send," along with a pull-down menu that lets you customize the cancelation period anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds.  The way it works is that each time an email is sent, a pop-up appears offering the option to read the message or take it back.

To enable Undo Send:

1. Click the gear in the top right
2. Select Settings
3. Scroll down to "Undo Send" and click Enable
4. Set the cancelation period (the amount of time you have to decide if you want to unsend an email)
5. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page

If you had Undo Send turned on in Gmail Labs, your Undo Send setting will be on by default.

The "Undo Send" is not yet available for the Gmail mobile app.  Read about the Google announcement here.

MacBook laptops can now be borrowed at the Circulation Desk. Adapters are also available to connect them to the large LCD panels in the Group Study Rooms. MacBooks can be borrowed for a period of 7 days. The MacBooks have OS X Yosemite installed as well as Microsoft Office, Google Chrome, FireFox, Safari, and EndNote X7.

This year’s Commencement speaker was Dr. Darell Kirch, president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The exhibit honors students, a number of individuals and faculty members with Lifetime Achievement Awards, Distinguished Alumni Awards and Excellence in Teaching Awards.

The book club selection for July is Five Quarters of the Orange, by Joanne Harris.

The summer travel season is officially here, and we and international visitors will be trekking across the country to visit thousands of national and international destinations. Data from the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, a division of the Department of Commerce, shows that approximately 22 percent of all international travel to the United States occurs in July and August.

The CDC Travelers' Health is dedicated to helping travelers prevent illness and injury during international travel. The CDC works to reduce illness and injury in US residents traveling internationally or living abroad through recommendations, notices, education, and support to travelers and health care providers based on the best science available.

The CDC page, links you to the Center for Disease Control's International Travelers' Health Information sheet for the different areas of the world. Also included is information about contagious diseases, vaccinations, safe food and water, traveling with children, and special needs travelers.

The latest release of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2015 which provides 2014 data, is now available through the D. Samuel Gottesman Library.  The new release includes the integration of two new metrics, the Journal Impact Factor Percentile and a Normalized Eigenfactor. 

• The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) Percentile translates a journal’s category rank into a percentile. For example, a journal that is ranked 19 out of 291 Biochemistry & Molecular Biology journals would receive a JIF Percentile score of 0.94. Curiously, using the JCR normalization method,* a journal ranked first among seven Andrology journals would only receive a score of 0.93.

• The Normalized Eigenfactor (NE) Score converts a journal’s Eigenfactor into a multiplicative score centered around 1, such that, if a journal received an NE score of 2, it would be twice as influential as the average journal in the network. It should be noted that Eigen-based metrics (unlike the Impact Factor) require iterative computation upon the entire citation dataset, and there is no standard for how that calculation is done. Also included is, detailed analysis of underlying journal level data; two complementary calculations so that journals can be compared within and between subject disciplines; an Open Access (OA) Filter; and a variety of user updates.  Read the press release here.

DynaMed is clinical reference tool created by and for physicians and other healthcare professionals for use at the point-of-care. To install the free DynaMed app:

The days when most PhDs ended up in academia are long gone. Whether the shift is due to the changing employment landscape or to increased attention to personal interests, the majority of PhD graduates today pursue “alternative” careers. Publishing and media companies have a strong need for content and technology experts, and PhD graduate offer transferable skills that are particularly well suited to these jobs. The world of science publishing allows PhDs to employ their technical knowledge and keep their finger on the pulse of science, while gaining knowledge on broader topics. This presentation expands on career opportunities in science publishing, explains job requirements, gives an idea of potential career trajectories, and offers tips on how to get that coveted position.
